I haven't read Papadiamantis's works, but he was in church with some saints, wasn't he? He didn't judge them. Having been raised by a mean drunk, I forget there were repentant ones, too. Among both types there are loved ones, that people make excuses for, and cover for. Those kinds of people that waste way too much of their lives in a bar, but still manage to create something, like Dostoevsky, who nailed an Orthodox saint in a novel (I would love to find others) are pretty hard on themselves, deep down. I hope it isn't an excuse for anyone to be the artist in the bar, as they are absent and leave the rest of us who love them a gap we have to cover somehow. It could happen to any of us artists. It's a hard life. It tends to be part of the mystique for some young artists, almost a cultural expectation of the crazy artist who can't fit in, and who is in such pain that he turns to drink. Walker Percy mentioned a difficulty in fitting back into life, "reentry," from the transcendence of writing novels, that caused some artists, such as Faulkner, to turn to drink. Walker Percy-- walked. Even my grandpa met him in the neighborhood on his walks, and thought he was a great guy.KK Iconshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08137591952049616448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714437334790446678.post-43535577223206694822012-06-15T17:04:44.871-05:002012-06-15T17:04:44.871-05:00"The irony is that many American Catholics (s..."The irony is that many American Catholics (sic) seem closer to Ryder’s attitude than to Cordelia’s."<br /><br /> Unfortunate, but true.love the girlshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11086068884134493993noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714437334790446678.post-49114246813304395942012-06-06T21:14:12.439-05:002012-06-06T21:14:12.439-05:00Excellent post! The danger for us is that I think we instinctively react in the same manner as Ryder did, with all our foolish notions about "success."Terry (John)https://www.blogger.com/profile/07523479530843509695noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714437334790446678.post-48451562657465906872012-06-06T18:06:16.287-05:002012-06-06T18:06:16.287-05:00Thank you, John!
